President Xi champions BRICS plus at Business forum, Bureau Report

Xiamen, August 4th: Chinese president Xi Jinping has said that One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative is not an instrument to push the geopolitical agenda but a platform for cooperation and pragmatic relationship.
President Xi made the remarks in the key note speech delivered here at the opening ceremony of the BRICS Business Forum here in Xiamen, south east China’s Fujian province on Sunday.
In the 1st OBOR summit held in Beijing this year, 29 head of states, 1600 representatives from 140 countries and 80 international organizations attended the event.
Xi said that from the APEC Summit to the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, and then to the BRICS Summit in Xiamen, China is participating in global governance through its own practices in order to contribute solutions to the world’s problems.
After 10 years of BRICS, and with the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese enterprises have ushered in the best era for opportunities to go global, however, there are also some challenges to be met yet.
He told that OBOR is not a foreign aid scheme but an initiative for interconnected development which calls for extensive solution, cooperation and shared benefits.
He started a speech by highlighting the history of Xiamen and its role since ancient times as a gate way of China’s opening up.
While talking about the achievements of the BRICS countries, he said that the past decade has witnessed the real development to more than 3 billion people of member countries.
“BRICS spirit” played a significant role in the development of the member countries with global progress in mind, he went on saying.
While rejecting a notion that BRICS countries were losing their luster, he said that the countries were confident about the development in future.
While talking about the enhancement of the BRICS forum, President told that “BRICS Plus” approach should be promoted for building an open and diversified network of practical partners.
He also said that BRICS nations must uphold global peace and stability stressing a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security.
He also mentioned that political conflicts must be resolved across the globe with the meaningful dialogues and the crisis of Palestine, Syria and Libya must come to an end peacefully.
He added that China will stay firmly committed to peaceful development and make even greater contribution to global peace and development.
He said that BRICS nations must remain open to each other, China is open for international investment while in the same way Chinese enterprises were being encouraged to invest globally.
Xi also told that, China will continue to put into practice the vision of innovative, coordinated, green, open and inclusive development.
“We will adapt to and steer the new normal of economic development, push forward supply-side structural reform, accelerate the building of a new system for an open economy, drive economic development with innovation, and achieve sustainable development”, said Xi.
He also highlighted the fact that, China’s economic aggregate grew by 239 percent over 10 years, and its total volume of exports and imports in goods rose by 73 percent. The country has become the world’s second largest economy, the lives of its 1.3 billion-plus people have been significantly improved, and China has made increasingly greater contribution to both regional and global economic development.
While talking about the achievements of BRICS, he said the last decade has not only seen solid progress in the BRICS cooperation mechanism; it has also witnessed the unfolding of all-round reform and opening up in China and its rapid economic and social development.
The mutual understanding between peoples is essential to the development of BRICS cooperation and the establishment of broader partnerships. We should give full play to people-to-people exchange, he told in the speech.
President Xi also added that “I am convinced that as long as we take a holistic approach to fighting terrorism in all its forms, and address both its symptoms and root causes, terrorists will have no place to hide”.
BRICS includes five major economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The 9th BRICS summit under the theme of “BRICS: Stronger partnership for a brighter future”, is being held in Xiamen from September 3 to 5.
