Hoping Disease Is No Longer a Metaphor

0

Susan Santana once pointed out that disease is a cultural metaphor. Compared to physical pain and the effects of treatment, the attitudes of people around you are even more harmful to patients.

Rumors and fears always come with illness. Some articles point out that with the emergence of Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia infections in other Asian countries, Europe, America, and Oceania, panic and xenophobia are gradually rising. In public places in other countries, people from East Asia are even afraid to cough, because they fearing to attract suspicion and panic.

Virus is a magnifying glass of human nature. Viruses are terrible, but discrimination and evil words are more dreadful.

▲ On Snapchat, some students wrote that they hoping not to be infected with many Asian students in the Calculus 151 class. Some students indicated that they are considering withdrawing from the course.

At this critical moment, the big love and the big evil are so clear-cut, and how big the big love is. It is worth our relief that we know that someone is actively working to break prejudice. “Though miles apart, we are under the same sky”, what touched us was not only the elegance of words, but also the understanding and empathy hidden in just eight words. Britain, France, Russia and other countries also donated medical supplies to Wuhan and China. The practice of international humanitarian assistance shapes mutual understanding and commonality. In order to avoid stigmata, WHO deliberately avoided mentioning any person, place or animal associated with the Novel Coronavirus when naming new virus.

Parents are reminded to pay attention to their children’s words and deeds: As information continues to spread on the news and on the Internet, we afraid that some people will discriminate against relevant personnel in China and Wuhan.

Respect and love reach people’s hearts but regardless of national borders. In the face of understanding and love, we should express our gratitude.

The book to be introduced today is the most formal physical carrier that records history and inherited culture. It tells a precious friendship across the borders during the epidemic: In only 384 hours, how Gao Yousi and members of the foreigners research association overcame all kinds of difficulties, raised and delivered a total of 229 cases and a weight of nearly 1 ton medical supplies, including more than 100,000 medical masks, 50,000 pairs of medical gloves, 7,000 medical surgical gowns,  to Huanggang , Hubei province.

384 hours from Tel Aviv to Huanggang

On February 13, 2020, China’s first multi-language book, China, we got your back:384 hours from Tel Aviv to Huanggang (Chinese and English version) is published by the Xinxing Press of the China Foreign Languages Bureau.

“Though miles apart, we are under the same sky”. The old saying on the box of medical aid form Japan to China has moved countless people in an instant. At the same time, the members of the Foreigners Research Association are still busy. On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Gao Yousi, the founder of the Foreigners Research Association, and Xia Bobo were starting their emergency fundraising in Israel, which is thousands of miles away from China. They said that they really want to do something for China.

Israel is a country with historical scars. During the Second World War, when the anti-Jewish wave came, even though under great pressure, He Fengshan, a Chinese diplomat in Austria, bravely opened the door to issue visas to Jews and helped more than 1,000 Jews to escape being arrested into concentration camps. Facing the monument, the former Israeli Prime Minister Sharon said He is not a hero or an angel, he is God. In the face of the disaster, China and Israel went hand in hand.

After the aid work started, Gao Yousi and Xia Bobo found that as two young people in Israel, their capabilities are limited. They swept the entire inventory of major pharmacies but only bought less than 2,000 medical masks. At this time, they contacted with the China-Israel Chamber of Commerce and were allowed to enter before the end of the board meeting to introduce their plan to assist China in fighting the epidemic. Most of the members of the board of directors of the China-Israel Chamber of Commerce have close ties with China.

After listening to their introduction, Dr. Yuval Bloch, the chief director of Innonation Medical (a Sino-Israel medical cooperation agency), said, “China is a tough country. The most important reason why China is so strong is the solidarity of the Chinese people, especially in disasters, like as shown in this outbreak. ”

Ofra Gordon, general manager of the International Cooperation Department of Sheba Medical Center, which was selected as the top ten global hospitals in the 21st century by Newsweek in the United States, said, “Everyone needs to understand all the obstacles and difficulties that medical professionals are dealing with. Let us put aside fears and difficulties for the time being. ”

Roni Gamzo, a well-known Israeli medical professor, said, “We will provide all assistance in masks and medical equipment to China.”

Tslil Kleinman, representative of the China-Israel Chamber of Commerce, said, “We need to take action and do something for people in Hubei and China. I always remember how China helped us whenever we were in difficulties and we are standing behind China this time. ”

Amir Gal Or, honorary chairman of the China-Israel Chamber of Commerce, said, “The Chinese people have helped Jews for many times in history, especially during the Second World War. China has always been committed to friendship and mutual assistance among many countries, so we should try our best to help China. ”

With their help, Gao Yousi and Xia Bobo raised 30,000 medical masks in few hours, and more supplies were continuously gathered to them. At that time, “strive and get in touch with as many people as possible, and it will be better if we can get donations as soon as possible” was the goal to Gao Yousi and Xia Bobo.

The difficulty is unimaginable to find 100,000 masks in a country with a population of just over 8 million. Masks in the three major cities of Jerusalem, Haifa and Tel Aviv are all out of stock, and hospitals are no longer available.

At this time, some of the most ordinary Israelis helped them.

On page 85 of the book is a photo of an Israeli barber. This is a very normal barber shop in Israel, they may never have received a Chinese guest, but they donated 5 masks that they only have to those who may not meet in a lifetime. These Israelis convey the power of love in their own way.

Among the donated masks, there was a box with an outer bag that said: “Pengchang ave, Pengchang town, Xiantao (433018), Hubei, China”. It turned out that Xiantao was one of China’s major non-woven products manufacturing and exporting bases. This box of medical masks from Xiantao, Hubei, China, was once exported to Israel. Now, they are back to the original place to help people there.

With 100,000 medical masks, 50,000 pairs of medical gloves and 7,000 surgical gowns, Gao Yousi and Xia Bobo raised a total of 229 cases of medical supplies weighing nearly 1 ton. However, it is too difficult to ship goods to China due to the complicated international logistics procedures and various international routes have been canceled.

Fortunately, after breaking through many obstacles and overcoming the obstacles after another, the supplies were finally transported via Russia to Huanggang, Hubei, one of the cities lacking medical supplies except Wuhan.

From deciding what to do to completing the delivery of supplies, Gao Yousi and Xia Bobo experienced 384 hours of nervousness, busyness, chaotic jet lag and anxiety, but everything was worth it.

Gao Yousi said: As long as you have a firm determination and never give up the perseverance and enthusiasm for helping others, everyone can do it.

Xia Bobo said: Believe me, if we can do it, you can do it. At the same time, we also validated that many people around the world are working hard to help China, we are happy and we are not alone.

This story may not sound so thrilling, but a kind behavior of ordinary people has moved us.

The spread of hostility beyond the virus may come from ignorance or prejudice, but action is the best way to break prejudice.

This action may just give someone a hug on the street, or tell a little story of themselves on social media to break certain rumors and prejudices. Maybe it is a Japanese mother who wrote a sincere letter to teach children to care for the vulnerable group in the disaster, or it may be a loving aid described in this book .

We hope that these small actions can dissolve some frost, make the heart beat, and let us know that we are breathing in the same world.
