Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday addressed the plenary session of the 23rd St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in Russia.


St. Petersburg : CCTV+ BATIE: In his speech, Xi stressed the importance of economic growth, social development and environmental protection.

President Xi also talked about the Belt and Road Initiative, calling for its further alignment with the UN’s sustainable development agenda.

“China has always remained firm in fulfilling its commitment to sustainable development, and has made universally acknowledged achievements. China attaches high importance to the international cooperation on sustainable development. In 2013, I proposed the joint efforts to build the Belt and Road Initiative, which is aimed to realize mutual benefit, win-win results and common development of all countries. This initiative highly matches the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in terms of goals, principles and ways of implementation, and it has gained positive response and support from the international community,” he said.

The economic forum opened on Thursday, under the motto of “Creating a Sustainable Development Agenda.” The forum is to focus on pressing global issues of economic growth, trade tensions, injustice and the impact of advanced technologies, and the participants are to discuss future plans for sustainable and balanced development.

Xi arrived in St. Petersburg on Thursday to attend the SPIEF after holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday.
