China-Macao/Patriotic Education Schools in Macao organize patriotic activities to mark upcoming 20th return anniversary

CCTV+BATIEGHAR: Students and teachers in primary and middle schools from China’s Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) are holding a series of events to mark the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.
Among all, the Macao Basic Law Promotion Association has organized a citywide design competition, calling on everyone to participate by showing their love for the motherland through art.
“By telling them the importance of the Basic Law, we can help them know more about our motherland and pass on patriotic education,” said a teacher from the Macao Pui Ching Middle School.
Over the years, a series of laws and regulations have been implemented in the SAR’s schools to carry out patriotic education, including teaching students to learn about the national flag, the national anthem and national emblems in schools.
At the same time, a variety of popularization activities have helped people better understand the “one country, two systems” principle and the Basic Law.
For example, the majority of the schools in the SAR nowadays hold national flag-raising ceremonies every Monday morning. All schools, colleges and universities in Macao fly the national flags on important festivals.
To celebrate the anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland which falls on Dec 20, patriotic activities including educational exhibition on national security, summer camps themed on national defense, diplomatic knowledge competition as well as exchange programs for the city’s students to visit the Chinese mainland have been held to mark the occasion.
“We have always placed great importance on patriotic education because only by having people know about the mainland, know about our motherland, can they deepen their love for our country,” said Cheang Hong Kuong, chairman of the Chinese Educators Association of Macao.
“We want our young people to have both knowledge and develop virtues. Virtues can have different meanings in different circumstances. For Macao, as a SAR, I think the most important virtues are patriotism, or love for the city and the motherland. This is what I believe every young person here should have,” said Lo Iek Long, chairman of Macao New Chinese Youth Association.
